How Long Do Laser-Engraved Crystals Last, and How Do You Clean Them?
Share
One of the best things about a 3D photo crystal is how little care it needs. Here's why the engraving lasts, and the few simple things that keep the crystal looking as clear as the day it arrived.
How long does the engraving last?
For a lifetime. The image isn't printed, painted or stuck on. It's made of microscopic points etched inside the glass by a laser, below a polished surface that nothing touches. That means:
- It can't fade. There is no ink or dye for sunlight to bleach.
- It can't scratch or rub off. Cleaning, handling and dusting only ever touch the outer surface.
- It doesn't yellow. Optical K9 crystal stays clear for decades.
The only real risk to a crystal is physical damage: a hard knock or a drop onto a tiled floor can chip an edge.
How to clean your crystal
- Dust with a microfibre cloth. For everyday dust and light fingerprints, this is all you need.
- For smudges, use lukewarm water. Dampen the cloth (not the crystal) with lukewarm water and a drop of mild dish soap, wipe, then wipe again with a clean damp cloth.
- Dry straight away. Buff dry with a second, dry microfibre cloth to avoid water spots.
- Glass cleaner is fine in moderation. Spray it on the cloth, never directly on the crystal sitting on its base.
What to avoid
- No dishwasher. Heat and detergent can etch the surface, and knocks can chip the edges.
- No abrasive pads or powders. They leave fine scratches on the polished surface.
- No sudden temperature changes. Don't run a cold crystal under hot water or leave it in a hot car.
- No paper towels for polishing. They can leave lint and fine marks; microfibre is better.
Caring for the LED light base
- Keep the base dry. Lift the crystal off before cleaning it with anything damp.
- Dust the top of the base where the crystal sits; dust there shows up as specks in the light.
- Wipe the bottom of the crystal before putting it back, so the light passes through cleanly.
Where to display it
- A stable, flat surface away from the edge of a shelf or table, out of reach of pets and small children.
- Out of direct sunlight on a windowsill. The engraving won't fade, but clear glass can focus sunlight into bright spots.
- Somewhere a little shaded if you use an LED base; the glow looks best in softer light.
Moving or storing it
Keep the gift box your crystal came in. It's the safest way to move or store it. Wrap the crystal in a soft cloth first.
