What to Engrave on a Memorial Crystal: Words, Names and Dates

When you order a memorial crystal, the photo does most of the work. The words underneath only need to do one thing: say who this is and that they are still loved. This guide collects the phrases families choose most often, shows how to lay out names and dates so they read cleanly in glass, and ends with messages for the card that goes with the gift.

Start with the name

Most memorial engravings are a name and dates, sometimes with one short line above or below. A name alone is never wrong. Use the name the family actually used: “Grandpa Joe” may mean more on a bedside table than a full legal name.

How to format names and dates

Keep it to one or two short lines so the text stays crisp and doesn't crowd the portrait. These layouts read well:

  • Margaret Wilson · 1941–2026
  • In loving memory of Dad · 1950–2026
  • Joe “Grandpa” Morrison · Forever loved
  • Ruth Anne Chen · May 4, 1938 – Oct 2, 2026

A centred dot (·) or a dash between the name and the years looks cleaner than commas. Full dates are lovely but long; years alone are easier to read at a glance.

Short memorial phrases (under 40 characters)

  • In loving memory
  • Forever in our hearts
  • Always with us
  • Loved beyond words
  • Gone but never forgotten
  • Your love lives on in us
  • Until we meet again
  • Forever loved, forever missed
  • A life beautifully lived
  • Always in our thoughts
  • Your light still guides us
  • Held in our hearts forever
  • Rest in peace
  • Those we love never truly leave

Words for a parent, grandparent or partner

  • For a mother: “Mom, our first love”, “A mother's love is forever”
  • For a father: “Dad, our hero, always”, “Forever our guide”
  • For a grandparent: “Grandma's love lives on”, “The heart of our family”
  • For a husband or wife: “My love, my best friend”, “Together always”

Remembering a pet

Pet memorials often sound warmer and a little lighter: “Good boy. Best friend.”, “Run free, sweet friend” or “Paw prints on our hearts”. See more ideas on our pet memorial crystals page.

Tips before you order

  • Check spellings and dates twice. Ask another family member to read them; it is easy to miss a typo when you are grieving.
  • Less is more. A name and one line almost always looks better than a verse.
  • Add a 3D proof if you want to see the photo and text together before we engrave.
  • Choose the photo first. A smiling, natural photo sets the tone; then pick words that match it.

What to write in the card

If you are sending a memorial crystal as a sympathy gift, add a greeting card. Keep the message simple and sincere:

  • “Thinking of you. I hope this keeps her smile close.”
  • “With love and deepest sympathy. He will always be remembered.”
  • “We're holding you close and sharing your loss.”
  • “I'll always remember his laugh. Sending love to all of you.”

Sign it the way you would sign a sympathy card: “With love,” “With deepest sympathy,” or simply your name.
